Bridge Engineer

The Bridge Department provides a variety of engineering services that ensure the safe operation and structural integrity of the county’s bridges and culverts. Their duties include managing the production of construction plans and cost estimates prepared by engineering consultants and department staff, inspecting and inventorying bridges and culverts, creating plans for county maintenance operations, analyzing truckloads for bridges, implementing quality control standards to meet state and federal regulations, and supplying technical assistance to other departments and public entities.

The Maintenance branch of the Bridge Department is responsible for the upkeep of over 350 bridges and 145+ culverts on county roads. The bridges are those spans with an opening of ten feet or more, and the culverts are those that are less than ten feet. They also fabricate and install concrete box culverts, drainage pipe, and catch basins; build and repair drain tile, retaining walls, guardrail, and embankments; clear debris from stream channels and drainage ditches; and remove unsafe trees from the public right-of-way.
