Bridge Builders Biography Chapter 11
Third Avenue and King Avenue Bridges
The replacement of the old bridges at Third Avenue in 1998 and King Avenue in 1999 would continue the tradition of building neo-classical structures over the Olentangy River.
The double-span Third Avenue Bridge is 270 feet long and 42 feet wide. The structure consists of continuous, precast, post-tensioned, concrete girders that rest upon a single river pier.
Five post tensioned, concrete arches comprise the King Avenue Bridge. The crossing is 392 feet long and 60 feet wide.
Both structures, built by the C.J. Mahan Construction Company, feature decorative railings and street lighting that honor the spirit of old Columbus and the bridge builders of yesteryear.
