As a local public works agency headquartered in Columbus, Ohio, the Franklin County Engineer's Office is responsible for the maintenance and construction of 271 miles of county roadway and 351 county bridges, as well as upkeep of all county ditches, drains, retention basins, and other storm water facilities within the right-of-way of county roads in unincorporated areas. To meet the continuing development and infrastructure needs of Franklin County, the Engineer's Office utilizes the latest technologies for determining and maintaining roadway centerlines and boundaries; retracing and setting new monuments for original public land surveys; preparing geographic information system mapping for real estate tax assessments; and establishing precise countywide horizontal and vertical control to maintain uniformity in construction, surveying, and mapping.

The Ohio Department of Transportation (ODOT) has begun a bridge rehabilitation project on the Gantz Road bridge over I-270. The bridge closed on Monday, March 31, 2025, and will remain closed for approximately 120 days for bridge replacement work. The schedule is weather-dependent and subject to change. We’re excited to share the sign of the winning design has now been installed at the Renner Road construction site for all to see. Eastbound Renner Road, between Alton & Darby Creek Road and Spindler Road, is closed for roadway improvements. Westbound traffic will be maintained. The closure will last approximately 140 days, weather permitting.

GREG THOMAS

Responsible for maintaining open communications between the Franklin County Engineer’s Office and all Law Enforcement Agencies, Fire Departments and EMS Agencies within the County. Maintains contact lists for these agencies as well as local area school districts for the purpose of providing notice of upcoming construction projects, road closures and detours. Processes traffic crash report data as well as collects data for all fatal traffic crashes on county jurisdictional roadways. Oversees the Engineer’s Office Weight Enforcement Program contract through the Franklin County Sheriff’s Office.

Attends and represents the Engineer’s Office on many committees through Franklin County EMA and Homeland Security, Franklin County Public Health, Columbus Public Health, and other governmental meetings. Provides additional assistance to the Mobility Department and other agency departments as needed.
